چکیده

If the great 16 century French surgeon, Ambrose Paré, who stopped the practice of pouring boiling oil into gunshot wounds, were to return today, what would impress him most about the evolution of medicine ? We might suggest three achievements : our ability to look into any corner of the body using imaging and scoping techniques, the vast range and specificity of drugs in our current armamentarium and the omnipresence of tubes. Yes, tubes ! Nearly every hospital patient Paré would encounter would have a tube lodged in a vein, and much of the success of the first two technologies could be ascribed to these little plastic devices which have quietly revolutionized medicine. This paper will tell the story of this revolution, beginning with the fledgling attempts to exchange blood between persons in the Middle Ages through to the plastic devices of today which, in addition to delivering therapy, now protect patients from adverse events and users from bloodborne pathogens. In a follow-up paper (31) we will explore the procedures for using these devices and will suggest guidelines for best practices.

Complications of Peripheral Intravenous Catheters During 72 Hours After Insertion

Introduction: Peripheral Intravenous catheterization is the most commonly used invasive treatment method in patients admitted to the hospitals, but it has some complications. The indwell time of catheter is one of the factors associated with the occurrence of complications, especially phlebitis. In spite of the instructions for replacing the catheters after 72 hours, sometimes the complications...

The effects of pulsatile flushing on phlebitis and peripheral intravenous catheters patency

Background and Aim: Thrombophlebitis is considered as a major cause of peripheral intravenous catheters (PICs) failure. The flushing technique in the laboratory has been effective in clearing the catheter duct, but its effectiveness in the clinical setting is unknown, therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the effect of pulsatile flushing on phlebitis, type, and duration of PICs pate...

The use of S-Monovette is effective to reduce the burden of hemolysis in a large urban emergency department

BACKGROUND Due to the high prevalence of hemolysis in specimens received from the emergency department (ED), several strategies have been proposed to improve sample quality, but none of these seem effective to overcome the problem. In a preliminary study we showed that the use of S-Monovette blood collection system was effective to lower the risk of hemolysis in venous blood samples collected f...

Central vs peripheral venous catheters in critically ill patients.

A prospective study of 2,209 intravenous catheters was performed in a multidisciplinary intensive care unit to determine when and why catheters were removed and which sites of insertion were associated with the least morbidity. Techniques of insertion were vigorously supervised. Central and peripheral catheters were cared for by identical protocols. Overt phlebitis or inflammation around the si...

Comparison of Dwell-Times of Two Commonly Placed Peripheral Intravenous Catheters: Traditional vs. Ultrasound-Guided

Introduction: Because establishing venous access in patients can be difficult and time consuming, the use of ultrasound to guide the insertion of peripheral intravenous catheters has become more common. Anecdotal evidence indicates ultrasound-guided catheter insertion may result in decreased catheter survival in the vein (dwell-time), but there is little evidence to support this observation. Th...
